SLBA Report

Shawnigan Lake Business Association Report. Many of you may have noticed the construction at Cairn Park (across the road from the Fire Hall on Shawnigan Mill Bay Road). The frame work that is going in will be housing a new Shawnigan Information Sign, to assist visitors in finding many of the great sights and business the area has to offer. A special thank you to the South Cowichan Rotary, for all their hard work on the park and sign structure.

Many businesses have signed up to have themselves profiled on the sign, but there is still room for more. If you are interested, please contact the SLBA as soon as possible.

Also being worked on is the reprint of the Shawnigan Lake Map. The ad space is almost all sold, and as soon as it is we will be sending the map to print. Like the sign any business interested in getting on the map, please let us know as soon as possible. If you would like to get a copy of the map they are available at the Barbershop along with many other businesses throughout Shawnigan.

On August 20th from 11-3 the SLBA and Camp Pringle will be hosting a Family Picnic. This picnic is open to all business, their staff and families. There will be a host of activities including, rock climbing, archery, swimming, and kids races.

Cost is $2 per person and includes a hotdog, beverage and chips. Life guards will be on duty and instructors will be available to assist with the rock climbing and archery. Closed toed shoes will be needed for use on the climbing wall.

This will be a great place to network with other businesses and take in the new Multi-Million dollar upgrades recently completed at Camp Pringle.  This is guaranteed to be an enjoyable afternoon for the whole family.

June SLBA Update

Attention ALL Business:
As mentioned in previous reports, the SLBA is working on a reprint of the Shawnigan Lake map. Over the past two years almost 10,000 maps have been distributed to both locals and tourists in Shawnigan Lake. With the number of remaining maps dwindling and the demand growing, not to mention the new roads and subdivisions in the area increasing, it is time for an update.
In addition to the map, the SLBA is working with the South Cowichan Rotary to provide a tourist information sign at Cairns Park (across from the fire hall on Shawnigan-Mill Bay Road). This sign will not only provide a street map of Shawnigan and local information but also display ads for local merchants.
With the collaborative efforts of the SLBA board, we are working to provide our members an opportunity for advertising at a very reasonable rate. In addition, we would like to extend this opportunity to non-members. Therefore any business wishing to take advantage of both the Cairns Park sign and the Shawnigan Lake map will receive their 2011/12 membership at no charge.
The cost for advertising in the map will be $150 plus the $65 SLBA membership, and the sign will also be $150 with the $65 SLBA membership. For both sign and map the total cost will be $300 which will include the SLBA membership, for a savings of $65.
Any business interested in taking advantage of this unique opportunity, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it by July 15th. Space is limited, so don’t delay.
Finally, Mark your calendars, Aug 20th for an SLBA / Camp Pringle Family Picnic. More information in future reports.

Canada Day!

On July 1st, Canada Day, the Village of Shawnigan Lake will come alive in celebration of Canada’s 144th birthday!
The day will begin with a pancake breakfast at the Malahat Legion Hall on Shawnigan Mill Bay Road from 9-11am. It will be hosted by the Legion and the Mill Bay Lions Club. Following breakfast, Legion Members will form a colour party, raise the Canadian flag, and lead us in O Canada!
Next a short parade will leave the Cairn Park, across the road from the Legion hall, and travel down to the Village entering the Elsie Miles grounds. Children can decorate their bicycles and wagons and participate in the parade along with local dignitaries, organizations and businesses!
The sounds of the Malaika Marimba Band on stage will get you dancing as you come on the grounds to join the fun! There will be games, prizes, draws, children’s races, the Rotary concession and so much more!! The Kids Can Build tent is always a popular place where the children construct a project with the pre-cut wood. The Seeds and Salt Theatre Troupe will be presenting a short theatre performance on historical happenings on Vancouver Island. A huge birthday cake will be cut so everyone will enjoy a piece.
This annual event is always held on Canada Day and is hosted by the Shawnigan Lake Community Association with assistance from the Shawnigan Lake Community Centre and Kerry Park Recreation Centre. Funding is provided by local donations and the BC Gaming Commission. Some activities will be fundraisers to support local youth groups.
Dress in Canada’s colours and bring the whole family to celebrate our nation’s birthday!
