Memory Island

Memory Island is the only island on Shawnigan Lake that is available for public use. The island was purchased, around 1947, by Mr. and Mrs. Mayhew and Mr. and Mrs. Scharff as a memorial to their respective sons and other airmen who had lost their lives in the Second World War. Both families had enjoyed Shawnigan Lake as summer residents and the island had been a favourite playground for their boys. The two families bought the island and presented it to the Provincial government as a permanent park and playground for children. This small island park is accessible only by boat but offers great picnic and swimming opportunities. The island is cooperatively managed by the Provincial government and the CVRD. It is a day use park only.
